A life dedicated to letters and learning.
Born in 1945 in the historic town of Thalassery, I have spent more than five decades inside the classroom and at the writing desk. Teaching English literature. Translating Urdu and Malayalam masters. Documenting the heritage of North Malabar.
My work moves between languages and across generations. Chaucer to Eliot in the lecture hall. Manto and Faruqi on the page. The old streets of Thalassery in the columns of Varthamanam and Padayani.

1945-ൽ തലശ്ശേരിയിൽ ജനനം. അഞ്ച് പതിറ്റാണ്ടിലേറെയായി ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് സാഹിത്യാധ്യാപനത്തിലും എഴുത്തിന്റെ മേശയിലും. ഉറുദുവിലെയും മലയാളത്തിലെയും കൃതികളുടെ പരിഭാഷ. വടക്കൻ മലബാറിന്റെ പൈതൃകം രേഖപ്പെടുത്തൽ. അതാണ് എന്റെ വഴികൾ.
എന്റെ കൃതികൾ ഭാഷകൾക്കിടയിലും തലമുറകൾക്കിടയിലും സഞ്ചരിക്കുന്നു. ക്ലാസ്സ് മുറിയിൽ ചോസറും എലിയറ്റും. താളിൽ മന്റോയും ഫാറൂഖിയും. വർത്തമാനത്തിന്റെയും പടയണിയുടെയും വായനക്കാർക്കിടയിൽ പഴയ തലശ്ശേരി.

പരിചയം
അക്ഷരങ്ങളിലൂടെ ഒരു യാത്ര
വടക്കൻ മലബാറിന്റെ സാംസ്കാരിക സമ്പന്നതയിൽ വളർന്നു. അതെന്റെ എഴുത്തിനെയും പ്രവർത്തനത്തെയും ഇപ്പോഴും പ്രചോദിപ്പിക്കുന്നു.
The Education
The path led from Town Mappila School and Madrassathul Mubarak in Thalassery to S.N. College Kannur, Government Brennen College, and Farook College, and on to Madras Christian College, where the pursuit of literature became a vocation.
I hold M.A. and M.Phil. degrees in English. The reading list never quite stops growing.

തലശ്ശേരിയിലെ ടൗൺ മാപ്പിള സ്കൂൾ, മദ്രസത്തുൽ മുബാറക് ഹൈസ്കൂൾ. പിന്നീട് കണ്ണൂർ എസ്.എൻ. കോളേജ്, ഗവ. ബ്രണ്ണൻ കോളേജ്, ഫാറൂഖ് കോളേജ്. അവസാനം ചെന്നൈയിലെ മദ്രാസ് ക്രിസ്ത്യൻ കോളേജ്. അവിടെവെച്ച് സാഹിത്യാന്വേഷണം ഒരു വൃത്തിയായി മാറി.
ഇംഗ്ലീഷിൽ എം.എ., എം.ഫിൽ. വായനയ്ക്ക് അവസാനമില്ല.
The Classroom
Thirty-three years as Head of the English Department at Islamiah College, Vaniyambadi. Principal at Prudence College and Al-Falah Women’s College. Today, still in the classroom as Visiting Professor at St. Thomas College of Engineering.
Generations of students. That is the truest archive a teacher keeps.
അദ്ധ്യാപന ജീവിതം
വാണിയമ്പാടി ഇസ്ലാമിയ കോളേജിൽ ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് വിഭാഗം മേധാവിയായി 33 വർഷം. പ്രൂഡൻസ് കോളേജിലും അൽ-ഫലാഹ് വനിതാ കോളേജിലും പ്രിൻസിപ്പൽ. ഇപ്പോൾ സെന്റ് തോമസ് കോളേജ് ഓഫ് എഞ്ചിനീയറിംഗിൽ വിസിറ്റിംഗ് പ്രൊഫസർ.
തലമുറകളിലെ വിദ്യാർത്ഥികൾ. ഒരദ്ധ്യാപകൻ സൂക്ഷിക്കുന്ന ഏറ്റവും സത്യസന്ധമായ രേഖ അതാണ്.

എഴുത്ത് എപ്പോഴും എനിക്ക് ലോകത്തെ വായിച്ചെടുക്കാനുള്ള വഴിയായിരുന്നു. പാരമ്പര്യത്തെയും ആധുനിക ചിന്തയെയും ഒരുമിച്ച് ചേർക്കാനുള്ള ശ്രമം.

The Home
Thalassery is where my heart is. I share my life with my wife, K.K. Afsath Beevi, our four sons (Muhammad Shahir, Muhammad Riaz, Muhammad Naufal, and Shahbaz), and our daughters-in-law and grandchildren. They are my greatest support and the audience I cherish most.

തലശ്ശേരി എന്റെ ഹൃദയത്തിലുള്ള സ്ഥലമാണ്. ഭാര്യ കെ.കെ. അഫ്സത് ബീവിയും, നാല് മക്കളും (മുഹമ്മദ് ഷാഹിർ, മുഹമ്മദ് റിയാസ്, മുഹമ്മദ് നൗഫൽ, ഷഹബാസ്), മരുമക്കളും, പേരക്കിടാങ്ങളും. അവർ എന്റെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ പിന്തുണയും, ഞാൻ ഏറ്റവും വിലമതിക്കുന്ന വായനക്കാരുമാണ്.

A life of learning is incomplete without a life of service. Thalassery has given more than it has taken.

I remain deeply involved in the social and cultural fabric of Thalassery. Promoting Mappila arts, working with school managements, and lending what I can to organisations that have shaped the community over decades.
